Why Church Matters

A local church is a group of saved, baptized believers who meet together to worship God, hear His Word preached, pray, and reach others with the Gospel. It's where you'll learn and grow, and where people will care for you and pray for you.

Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.

Acts 2:41-42

Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

Hebrews 10:25

Watching a sermon online can help, but it's no substitute for being there. Go in person, meet people, and let them get to know you.

Too Far From Rushville?

We understand. Wherever you live, it's worth taking the time to find a good church. Not every church that calls itself Christian teaches what the Bible says, so here's what to look for:

  • The Bible is treated as God's Word and the final authority, and it's preached from the pulpit.
  • They use the King James Bible.
  • They teach that salvation is by grace through faith in Jesus Christ alone, not by works or baptism.
  • They baptize believers, by immersion, after they are saved.
  • The Gospel is preached clearly, and the church works to reach lost people.
  • It's an independent Baptist church that holds to the doctrine on our What We Believe page.

Warning Signs

  • You never hear how to be saved.
  • Sin and hell are never mentioned.
  • The sermons are about self-help or entertainment, not the Bible.
  • Salvation is said to come by baptism, church membership, or good works.
  • Signs, feelings or experiences are treated as more important than the Bible.

How to Find One Near You

  1. Search online for “independent Baptist church KJV near [your town]”.
  2. Look at the church's website for a “What We Believe” page and compare it with the list above.
  3. Call or message the pastor and ask a few questions before you visit.
  4. Visit, and listen carefully to the preaching. Compare it with your Bible.

Questions to Ask the Pastor

  • “How is a person saved?”
  • “Which Bible do you preach from?”
  • “Do you baptize believers by immersion after they're saved?”
  • “Can a saved person lose their salvation?” (The Bible says no: John 10:28.)

These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

Acts 17:11
